A professor and an assistant lecturer in the Chemistry Department of the Federal University of Agriculture, FUNNAB, Abeokuta have had their appointments terminated based on a allegations of plagiarism.
The professor, Mrs. Janet Bamgbose, and the assistant lecturer, Akeem Bamigbade, were fired during the just concluded 76th statutory council meeting of the university which held two weeks ago.
Mrs. Bamgbose was a Reader in the Chemistry Department prior to her dismissal.
The sack is coming about a month after another Nigerian university, the University of Calabar in Cross River State, sacked four lecturers also for plagiarism.
Another was sacked for financial fraud.
“The academic staff dismissed for outright plagiarism include Dr Azubuike Iloeje and Dr Maurice Bisong of the Department of English and Literary Studies, Mr. Oden Ubi (Department of Marketing) and Dr Paulinus Noah of the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies,” the Registrar of the Calabar University had said.
Two other lecturers from the Chemisty Department of the Agriculture University were demoted from Lecturer I to Lecturer II also based on alleged plagiarism.
According to an official release in the university bulletin, reference FUNAAB/VC/PRD.08/42 and dated May 10, 2013, the names of the demoted lecturers are Mojisola Nkiko and Ahmed Akinyeye.
The disciplinary exercise was extended to other departments in the school with a director at the Department of Works and Services of the University, Omolola Banjo, suspended from duty without pay for three months for alleged conduct prejudicial to discipline and good governance; while two Chief Technical Assistants, Vitus Chukwu and Oluwasina Akinbola of the same department, who were said to have engaged in personal trade and business without permission, were given warnings.
A senior clerical officer of the Asset Department, Olalekan Adebisi, was dismissed for alleged non-remittance of journal page charges to the university’s journal account.
However, thirty-six lecturers’ promotions were also approved by the university authorities. The promotions were back dated, officially taking effect from September 30, 2011, October 1, 2011 and October 1, 2012 for various categories of lecturers.
