NDDC provides 186-room hostel for University

For the over 800 medical students of the University of Benin who have been faced with accommodation problem, succour has come to them following the construction of 186 rooms hostel complex by the management of the Niger-Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

 The project which was conceived and awarded in 2004 was left fallow until the coming of the present board of the NDDC. It cost over N1.3 billion.

 Edo State Commissioner for NDDC, Barr. Henry Okhuarobo while inspecting the project expressed happiness that the project was almost completed, and would help to alleviate the accommodation problem of the university.

 According to him, “although this project is one of those yet to be completed, hopefully we are delivering this project next month, but the target date which we set for ourselves was this month, but because of the volume of work and to minimize errors, the contractor has said that July would be the best time for delivery.

 “You will recall that this project was awarded initially in 2004 and had lain fallow for many years until last year when the present board of NDDC started fast-tracking the project.

 We are happy and you can see for yourselves and come to your conclusion what you are seeing in UNIBEN Medical Students’ Hostel where we are standing now.

 “The capacity of this hostel is 186 rooms to accommodate over 800 students. We also have other facilities like computer room, super markets, water borehole, etc.”

Three more Uniben Students murdered

Less than 24 hours after the shooting of Snazzy, who eventually died. the budding rap artist murdered during bio-metrics registration yesterday at University of Benin, 2 more students, yet to be identified have been murdered today in cold blood.

  It was gathered that 2 were killed at 3rd East road, while the 3rd person was killed at Ekosodin inside Uniben, all cult related.

 Also recent investigations reveal that another student other than Snazzy was killed yesterday, bringing the total no of deaths to 5 at the moment.

UNIBEN student killing: Edo Police Command sends case file to DPP

About 24 hours after the body of the 22 years old University of Benin (UNIBEN) student who was killed by the police last week, Ibrahim Momodu, was exhumed for autopsy by the police, the Edo state Police Command yesterday, forwarded the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal Advice.

 The state Commissioner of police, Mr Folunsho Adebanjo, who condemned any form of extra judicial killing, disclosed that the DPO of Ogida Police Station, Mrs Carol Afegbai and her orderly PC Amadin Idahosa, who were alleged to have shot at the deceased, have been redeployed with a view to facilitate further investigations into the matter.

 It would be recalled that the state governor, Adams Oshiomhole had set up a judicial panel of inquiry to investigate the killing of the final year UNIBEN students , following the outcry by the family members, that their son was not an armed robber contrary to the claim by the police that he was arrested with guns and was shot while evading arrest.

 But the Edo CP who briefed newsmen on the incident, expressed the readiness of the police to investigate the matter, just as he urged all the parties to maintain peace while the investigations are carried out.

 According to him, “ looking at the scenario now, it might be too early for any one to dismiss either the claim of the police or that of the bereaved family.

 In order to demonstrate the Edo state Police management team’s desire for justice and fairness as it concerns this case, the case file has been forwarded to the DPP for legal advice.

 “The DPO Ogida Division CSP Carol Afegbai and her orderly PC Amadin Idahosa who shot the deceased have also been redeployed to facilitate further investigation.

 The Command therefore, calls on the general public particularly the family of the deceased and the UNIBEN community to exercise restraint and go about their lawful business as we await the DPP advice on the matter please” he appealed.

'Body of versity student allegedly killed by DPO exhumed for autopsy'

FOLLOWING the setting up of a panel of enquiry to unravel the alleged killing of a 22-year-old Ibrahim Momodu, a final year student of the University of Benin by a police officer, last Week, by Governor Adams Oshiomhole, the corpse was yesterday exhumed by the police to undergo an autopsy.

 Meanwhile, controversy has continued to trail the killing of Momodu.

 While the police command in the state is claiming that he was a robber who was shot while trying to evade police arrest, the family said their son was never a criminal and was shot unjustly by the police.

 However, it was learnt that the DPO who allegedly shot the deceased was being investigated as the state Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adebanjo, had vowed to investigate the matter.

 Civil society organisations and students staged a peaceful protest last Tuesday, calling for the investigation of the matter. Executive Director of the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice, ANEEJ, Rev. David Ugolor, who led other civil society organisations to the family of the deceased and to the cemetery, commended the state government for investigating the matter, just as he condemned the alleged extra judicial killing of the student.

 Governor Oshiomhole had last Tuesday urged the parties to keep their cool and allow the panel to investigate the matter with a view to unravel the truth.

 However, there was heavy presence of the police at the cemetery where the corpse was exhumed, yesterday.

 The exhumed body was taken away by a team of pathologists and Vanguard observed that the deceased was buried with the cloths which he wore the day he was shot.

 Counsel to the family of the deceased Barr.Jeff Uworghiren, described as wicked “the allegation by the police that the deceased was a criminal.

 But I am happy we have our pathologist ready so we will see how it goes. We are only asking for justice, this is a test case for the new chairman of the Police Service Commission”.
