Asia Top 100 University rankings ( 2013)- Japan Leads

Producers of Global University rankings,Times Higher Education Magazine has unveiled Japan as Asia's top country for higher education and research. In the table, Japan has 22 institutions in the top 100 which is more than any other country in Asia.Still retaining first spot is Tokyo University.

Other countries doing so well include South Korea which has 3 universities in the top 10. They are the Pohang University of Science and Technology, Seoul National University and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology ranked fifth, eighth and tenth respectively.
Hong kong has 2 two universities in the top 10, they are Hong Kong University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology at number 3 and number 9 respectively. The ranking editor,Phil Baty called Hong Kong a star performer because of its size.

Singapore did very well with the National University of Singapore coming second place ahead of Hong Kong University. The older Singapore University in the lists, Nanyang Technological University was ranked 11th.

Taiwan has 17 institutions in the list making them the second best country just after Japan.
Mainland China has 15 universities despite its size and as Baty would put it "It still needs to catch up with some of its Asian rivals before it can move on and challenge the western elite in the overall University rankings.

Isreal has 3 universities in the lists, University of Jerusalem(15), Tel-Aviv University(15) and Technion (21).

These rankings were based on 13 indicators which includes staff to students ratios, number of PhDs and Undergraduate degrees awarded, citattions, research income from industry, reputation surveys, number of international staff and students and citation impact.
Malaysia boasts one university in the list, National University of Malaysia (87).Thailand is represented by 3 institutions in the lists, King Monkut's University, Thonburi(55), Bangkok's Chulongkorn University(82) and Mahidol University(61).

Indian universities that emerged include Indian Institutes of Technlogy (ITTs) Karagpur (30), Bombay (33) and Roorkee(56).A major surprise is ITT Delhi ,which is regarded as the top ITT in Indian not making it into the lists.Indian has just 3 universities in the top 100,a poor performance according to the organisers.
